I am very capable of trimming my own nails and do so regularly. But every few months I like to have them done properly.
Like many of you, I feel anything I can do for myself is best done by me. I tend to fairly practical and see no point spending money frivolously. When My toenails need to be shortened I can cut them. But there is a big difference between trimming my nails and having them cared for properly.
Having them done by someone else is more than just a treat. Particularly having them done with such attention to detail is recommended. Because I do care for my own feet I usually book a foot service with the change of season. I noticed big changes in the health of my nails when I started having them tended to by a professional. The first being my toe nails stopped chipping, breaking and tearing. Other benefits have been the improvement in callous management and a decrease in ingrown nail issues.
Regular Professional care of your feet means the difference between a rough finish and a smooth cut on the end of the nail which will help prevent your nail from catching or chipping. When your nail surface is smooth it reduces the ability for fungus or bacteria to grow. An esthetician has the advantage of the ability to work visually closer to your feet than you can and make sure that small cracks or abrasions that you may not notice get paid attention to. This helps prevent future problems of breaking or ingrown nails.
Proper cleaning of dead skin around the nail bed, part of any good foot service, helps prevent ingrowns, infection and odour issues. Oils and creams used in a professional setting are geared specifically to help with the health of the nail and skin. We use a blend that penetrates the nail easily helping the nails remain supple and is anti-bacterial and anti-fungal.
When it comes to spending a little money or time on your feet it really doesn't have to break the bank. For care at home make sure you have a moisturiser with ingredients like rosemary, tea tree or lavender at home to use regularly will go a long way in helping your feet. Soaking and moisturising your feet weekly is usually sufficient in the winter. In the summer months when your feet may be more exposed you may find you need to up it to daily. If you have any challenges with your feet when you come in for a service your esthetician can give your recommendations more suited to your personal needs.
Bringing your feet in for care, should not be out of reach, as there are many options. At the Flowering Tree we provide a nail care service for seniors and others that can’t clip their own nails for various reasons; it’s a short monthly service for $32 that is by invitation only. People interested in this service should inquire with the staff at the spa. For those who can still clip and tend their nails, they may want to book a couple of full pedicures a year, benefiting from not only the extra attention to their feet and nails but a foot and leg massage. If you are trying to watch your pennies you can book for just a buff and apply polish yourself at home or forgo the massage and book for the express Pedi. The range in price at our spa is from $45 - $65, including taxes.
From my feet to yours, happy walking J
